paktype-naskh-basic-fonts got retired: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/paktype-naskh-basic-fonts/c/eab6b0b609e34999b58ffcfed7fa2b2d04c2c066?branch=rawhide

this is our default Arabic font, it's in comps @fonts and it's also in the lorax templates for install to the anaconda runtime environment, that's what's causing most of the failed tasks.

I wrote to devel@ - as I wrote, our choices are:

  1. Someone picks up and unretires the package
  2. We find another, still-maintained font with the necessary coverage to replace it
  3. We drop it from the lorax templates and the fonts group and our Arabic support gets a lot worse

Hmmm, per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2093080 , we might be able to get away with dropping it and using Noto fonts instead, it seems like our fontconfig configuration actually prefers Noto fonts for Arabic anyway.

Per https://tagoh.fedorapeople.org/fonts/status/current.html , it seems we intend paktype-naskh-basic to be default for Punjabi (sans) and Urdu (sans). CC @tagoh - any thoughts on what we should do here?

I tested three installer images and compared Urdu, Punjabi and Arabic rendering:

  1. Older image with paktype-naskh-basic-fonts
  2. New image without paktype-naskh-basic-fonts
  3. New image without paktype-naskh-basic-fonts but with google-noto-nastaliq-urdu-vf-fonts added

There doesn't appear to be any difference between 2 and 3, so it doesn't seem like adding google-noto-nastaliq-urdu-vf-fonts helps anything.

Arabic looks the same in all three cases. For Punjabi, there are two variants listed; I'm afraid I can't read what either of them is. The default one appears the same in 1 and 2, but the second variant looks different. For Urdu, the appearance is clearly different between 1 and 2. I have no idea whether 2) is acceptable to a native Urdu speaker, we would have to find one and ask them! Ditto the second variant of Punjabi.

For "Punjabi after", focus on the second choice in the box on the right, that's the text whose appearance changes.

Yes, that's true. we need paktype-naskh-basic-fonts unretired.

Yes I thought maybe we could use nafees-naskh-fonts but that would be more work
(we should maybe make it default at some point or even the Noto Nastaliq Urdu?).

Agreed let's unretire the paktype-naskh-basic-fonts.
