#549 NeuroFedora presence at Flock 2023 (Cork, Ireland)
Closed: Fixed by ankursinha. Opened by ankursinha.

Hi folks,

Flock 2023 is being held from August 2-4 in Cork, Ireland this year:

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/save-the-date-flock-to-fedora-2023/

The CFP opened today:

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/flock-2023-cfp-open-now-until-20-june/

This ticket is for two things:

  • our presence at Flock: if you're coming please note it here, it'll be great to meet in person
  • submitting a talk at Flock: I'd like to submit an "Open (neuro)science and Fedora" talk---it'll give an overview of how heavily (neuro)science is reliant on FOSS, how the research community is pushing for more Open science, and what we as a community can do to help.

I'm hoping to go. For anyone else who needs a visa like me, please see this page:

https://www.dfa.ie/travel/visas/visas-for-ireland/

I'll be attending Flock. If there's anything I can do to help in the run up, let me know.

I'll be there to say hi!

@lbazan is also coming, they've submitted a CFP related to LATAM already:

https://cfp.fedoraproject.org/proposals/53/4887

I've submitted one for for NeuroFedora now:

https://cfp.fedoraproject.org/proposals/53/4890

Please let me know if you have any suggestions to improve the abstract, also if you'd like to be marked as an additional speaker. I've mentioned us all in the comments already.

@ankursinha Could add additional speakers to this ticket?

Sure, added you to it now.

Here's the abstract etc:

Abstract

In Fedora, we "default to open". It is our ethos, our driving philosophy---everything should be done openly, transparently, and everyone should be able to use, share, modify, study everything we generate. It is easy to see why such a philosophy is necessary for science---everything that is used and/or generated in science should be openly accessible, without restriction, by all. Everyone should be able to use, share, modify, study all scientific work. In recent years, the Open Science movement has gained ground. Policy making bodies, grant bodies, and individuals have all started to provide both carrots and sticks to encourage researchers to follow Open Science practices from the get go, not as an after thought.

In this talk, we (members of the NeuroFedora SIG) will give an overview of the neuroscientific research pipeline with special focus on how heavily reliant it is on FOSS. We hope to increase awareness of how FOSS is used in neuroscience to start conversations on what we as a community, and as individuals can do to help drive Open (neuro)science.

Commentary

Other members of the NeuroFedora SIG will also be present--- @gui1ty, @lbazan, @zbyszek have indicated that they'll be attending Flock too. We're tracking SIG members here: https://pagure.io/neuro-sig/NeuroFedora/issue/549

The audience is the general Fedora community, and it'll be good to have folks that participate in our governing bodies there too, just so they are aware of this information and can keep it in mind when making decisions that affect the community.

Quick FYI folks---our session has been accepted. I'll go start working on my visa now. See you folks there if you can make it.

Folks, it's looking unlikely that I'll make it to flock. I don't think I'll be able to get a visa in time :(

Would someone else want to present the talk? I'm happy to create the slides + notes etc., of course. Please let me know and I can speak to the flock organizers to add you as speakers?

I can help! :-(

That's very sad indeed.
The NI suggestion I made on Discussion might be worth considering. No pressure. Just an idea, if you feel a bit rebellious.

I could do the presentation. Maybe together with someone who has a scientific background (not me) or has been active a bit longer in NeuroFedora than I have.

That'll be great @gui1ty . @lbazan will be there, and I can make lots of notes for context etc. in the slides.

Have you signed up on the cfp website yet? If not, could you do that and I can ask folks to add you as a presenter/speaker there. (Since you're presenting, I think you're also eligible for accommodation/travel support from the community coffers now).

@gui1ty @lbazan : please register on the sched instance, and justin will add you as speakers to the session:

@ankursinha done! :-)

Sorry, the notification got lost under a pile of Bugzilla bugs.

I have registered now.

@gui1ty @lbazan : I'm working on the slides here, will have it done in a few hours:

@ankursinha I pinged you on IRC/Matrix, but putting it here as well in case someone else has an idea or solved it already.

I was going through the slides once more and I noticed that the footnotes are a bit messed up. Slide 8 is missing footnote 5. Slide 9 has footnote 4, but no marker. Slide 11 has footnote 5, but no marker.

Sorry for not noting earlier. Would you also happen to have a hint on using pdfpc? I tried with a second monitor and pdfpc -1 eDP-1 -2 HDMI-2 --notes=right 20230802_neurofedora_presentation_notes.pdf. That shows the presentation on the external screen. But the presenter screen has the slides and the notes. With my internal screen only being 1366x768 that becomes hard to read.

Thanks for checking! I've updated the slides now:

https://pagure.io/neuro-sig/20230802-flock-neurofedora/blob/main/f/20230802_neurofedora_presentation_notes.pdf

or raw link if that doesn't work (also uploading these on matrix)

https://pagure.io/neuro-sig/20230802-flock-neurofedora/raw/main/f/20230802_neurofedora_presentation_notes.pdf

So, if you press "Shift + c" to enter "customise" view, you can drag the boxes containing the current slide, next slide, and notes to change their sizes. See this screenshot:

Does that help?

Awesome talk @gui1ty ! Well done!

Thank you! It felt great. Especially when I heard you were answering some of the more scientific questions live on Matrix / IRC. A true team effort!

In hindsight, I could have spent a little more time familiarizing myself with the scientific terms. 🤓

Just wanted to developed my question on closed versus open source softtware on flock.
Sometimes open source software like an open source flight simulator tell a lot more about a person, such as me with adhd, abiility to pay attention in certain real world siutations rather than synthethic attention test. Thus a script added to open source flight sim called also be used for real word neruoscience. Ipay attention alot better to flightsim than a synthetic attention test as one example happy to be apart of this mailinglist etc.

That's very interesting to know @rikardgn . ADHD is not my area of research, so I know very little about the tools used in the field. if you do know any FOSS tools that you think we could package up, please do add them to the list.

Would you like me to add you to the pagure group so you get notifications from tickets and so on?

Closing this now. Thanks everyone for your help here
