When I was working with libpagure I had an issue that I couldn't distinguish between 404 errors and other possible exceptions.
This patch solved it for me. I'm not sure if this is your preferred way to do it, but it works and it made life easier for me.
I think https://pagure.io/libpagure/issue/24 is about this and the author probably had a similar issue as me.
