My memory is fuzzy on valid DNS labels but I thought dashes were limited only in the beginning and end of a label.

$ ipa host-add test--4.example.com
ipa: ERROR: invalid 'hostname': invalid domain-name: only letters, numbers , '-' are allowed. DNS label may not start or end with '-'
