#253 Update our web content
Closed: Fixed by aday. Opened by aday.

https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/ hasn't been updated in a long time, and needs to be improved. Some issues with the existing content:

  • It's rather thin - it's short and general in tone. You don't get a great overview of the product or what it can offer, and there's little detail to back up the general the statements. This leads to it feeling unconvincing.
  • It's fairly focused on the desktop, when there are other key aspects of the experience to mention, like the length of time you get updates, or the upgrade experience, or the kind of packages you get access to.
  • I don't get a great sense who our competitors are or what the value proposition is; some of the points feel generic to any Linux distro, which would be fine, except we're not making a pitch to non-Linux users either.
  • There's only one action - the link to the download page. This leaves the page feeling flat and non-interactive.

I have draft content which seeks to address these points.

We can look into updating the content on its own, using the current visual style. Or we could wait for the upcoming website redesign as a way to simultaneously refresh the visuals and the content.

I suggest interfacing with the web design folks ASAP with the above points that legitimately need solving in the early phase of the refresh. I would not leave anything to chance or assumption.

Already on it.

First draft of the new page can be seen here: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-workstation-front-page-revamp-first-cut-looking-for-feedback/37169

@aday are you happy with how the design process for the new website is going?

Anything remaining that we need to keep track of here?

It's a while since I've seen any new work, to be honest.

Anything remaining that we need to keep track of here?

If the new web site is still on track, probably not. If it's not, then I'd want to update the content on the old site.

It looks like https://fedora.gitlab.io/websites-apps/fedora-websites/fedora-websites-3.0/workstation/ was published on January 3. The first thing I notice is the missing Oxford comma in the title. I've provided some feedback in https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-workstation-front-page-revamp-first-cut-looking-for-feedback/37169.

Hi @aday I see you've been helping with the web content refresh. Do we need to continue tracking it here? Any further input required from the Working Group?

@catanzaro I have been providing feedback on the new site in fedora-websites-3.0#98, and it looks good from my side. It might be nice for the rest of the WG to look over the new site before we close this issue.

My $0.02: I'd say the overall design looks excellent.

There are some issues with the text itself. It looks like my original feedback from two months ago was never addressed (very prominent missing Oxford commas, very prominent and completely incorrect 18 month support cycle). I'd also remove all the ampersands as those are rarely suitable outside logos/trademarks.

Aside from @catanzaro's issues, my feedback about how we should position getting Fedora Workstation was not addressed (getting a computer with it preloaded should be in the same top billing as downloading it to put on your own computer).

We have a new website! \o/
