On Fedora KDE SDDM runs on Wayland. That doesn't work well with legacy Nvidia drivers that support Kepler cards (nvidia-470xx). Users have very low framerate until they login into X11 session.
It's possible to force SDDM to run on X11 with a simple config override

 /etc/sddm.conf.d/force_x11.conf
[General]
DisplayServer=x11

But since Fedora 40 KDE doesn't ship X11 support by default, that can lead to black screen on boot until users either install plasma-workspace-x11 package or remove SDDM config override (Fedora bug #2251988).

The proper way is to install sddm-x11 package that provides the same config override. However due to package conflicts, I don't know how to easily install it on Fedora Kinoite 39 and Fedora Kinoite 40.

So I have to go with:

For some reason that installs a lot of i686 packages.

This is by design. One and only one package for configuring the display server is permitted.

Did you try using Nouveau and forcing a higher clock manually? There's a guide for this.

The i686 package thing is not us, though. That's probably an rpm-ostree bug and needs to be reported to them: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/enter_bug.cgi?product=Fedora&version=40&component=rpm-ostree

The reason why rpm-ostree is confused here and trying to install i686 packages is likely that there is a version mismatch between the one in the testing repo and the one in the image. This should be fixed once we get out of the Beta freeze and we start enabling the archive repo. In the meantime, you can download the matching sddm-x11 RPM and install it with rpm-ostree.

Yes, you were right. I've tried again and the i686 packages are no longer installed.
