#11347 Fedora updates with dnf consistently chooses very slow mirrors form asian regions.
Closed: Fixed by adrian. Opened by alawamiaz.

Fedora behavior of choosing mirror for updates consistently chooses the worst mirrors for me. I'm from saudi arabia and while my connections to EU and NA is usually around 300-500mbps, my connection to most asian countries is around <30mbps (usually 10mbps) yet fedora consistently chooses mirrors from japan and china which are very slow for me.

Is it choosing mirrors based on continent? because that behavior is resulting in very poor bandwidth at least for me in saudi arabia. all ISPs of saudi arabia have very fast connection/routing to European servers but extremely poor bandwidth to asian servers. If mirrors are chosen based on continent it may results in a very poor updates speed in some countries like here in saudi arabia.

I thought Fastestmirror=1 in dnf would solve the problem as it will choose eurpoean mirrors (my ping to EU 85-110ms) but it doesn't, instead it chooses Singapore servers which are very slow for me too and my ping to Singapore is 250ms! not sure how it decided to go with singapore over Europe with fastestmirror=1.

This not only happens with dnf but even downloading ISOs form fedoraproject.org always gives me asian mirrors which are order of magnitude slower than European mirrors for users from Saudi Arabia.

TLDR: current mirror choosing behavior may choose slow mirrors for some users because it assume best mirrors are those in the same continent of the user?

Thanks for the report.

fastestmirror should never be used it doesn't work really well.

We can add Saudia Arabia to the list of countries which should be assigned to Europe. The main problem I see is that it will redirect everyone from Saudia Arabia to Europe which might not be optimal for everyone. Hard to tell.

I think we can try it out. @kevin what do you think, should we redirect 'SA' to 'EU'?

Sure, we can try it and see...

I can confirm it's much better, it's going 27MB/s now and it's connecting to European servers. It should be very ok the users of all saudi ISPs as all ISPs here (at least the top big 3) have slow connection to east asia.

Thanks for your prompt action.
