Just a note that the current design works as follows:

You sign into hubs for the first time and have a fresh FAS account, the hubs associated with the FAS groups that your FAS account is a member of automatically show up on your bookmarks bar (see https://pagure.io/fedora-hubs/issue/9 )

IF you have a preexisting FAS account, it's really not very likely that you're not going to have any hubs giving you information in your feed or displaying in your bookmarks bar.

If you have a new FAS account, you should be autosubscribed to a "welcome" hub. That hub could have information about what's going on across different hubs in its stream, and you could pick up hubs of interest to join up from there (was the thought originally anyway.)

We didn't have a design for a categorical list of hubs across all of hubs; the idea was that folks' navigation would be driven by either search (if they are looking for a specific hub) or by coming across something neat they wanted to be a part of (via welcome feed or links into specific hubs shared / posted elsewhere.) Other app designs that follow this pattern are twitter, facebook, G+, etc. G+ does have a "Explore" feature which operates similarly to how the "welcome" hub could function.

• so you first sign up for hubs, and you're not a member of any groups, you go to the welcome hub
• and the welcome hub says something like, hubs is a place for fedora contributors to interact and collaborate. how would you like to contribute to fedora?
• then a little asknot widget thing where it asks you the questions and you can go through it
  then it gives you the suggestions below using your widget design, and also suggests a featured group and a popular group
• so maybe every time you answer an asknot question you get three choices of hubs to follow -
  (1) the asknot suggestion (2) the popular suggestion (3) the featured suggestion

i like how you have the join / follow buttons right in the widget so they don't have to click down into each hub to join / follow - because i think at this point they are going to try to gather a lot of hubs to follow and figure out what they like. (kind of like add to cart vs purchase... they are adding the hubs to their cart, not necessarily purchasing yet) also note join can be a long process (eg in design team involves completing a task before admin approves you in) so might be better to just push them to follow since that's instant and quick

robyduck's idea is to have the buttons be gray and fade in color on rollover. good idea to place the mockup in full context with the whole site design to figure out appropriate button weights
