#320 Offload some of the resource work from Ambassadors
Opened by wispfox. Modified

One of the problems that came up in my initial interviews was that of the degree to which some ambassadors act as gateways to resources for their community. It's wonderful that those people are willing to do this. It would be really handy for both those people and their community to make accessing some of that information available directly.

As per the conversation between @duffy and I (https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fedora-hubs/2017-01-04/hubs-devel.2017-01-04-19.33.log.html), around note #3, the kinds of resources that ambassadors serve as include:

  • helping community members learn wiki pages
  • putting things on wiki pages for community members
  • supplying letters, forms, design assets (generally and specific to releases), videos, documents, visa letters, invitation/sponsorship letters
  • event creation
  • website set up and maintanance
  • Helping members know about local norms for getting event sponsorship, finding venues (best practices, basically)
  • volunteer signup, recruitment

Our conversation ended up with a number of possible ideas for solutions, but no resolution for what to do. This seemed like a very large and complex topic. Some of those ideas:

  • Q per each regional hub, where local ambassadors can list the questions and answers they get asked repeatedly and point to those to potentially save time and reduce burnout.
  • each regional hub could have a library widget with commonly asked-for resources (forms, design assets, etc)
  • a widget that points to release-specific assets of interest to regional folks (release party posters, media art, etc)
  • event widget that creates an event on fedocal and also gets added to the master events list to enable regional people to create local events
  • volunteer recruitment / sign up / tracking built into local events
  • work with commops to develop general best practices / training for regional ambassadors, and enable local organizers to fork their own version of those guidelines with local details
  • some kind of way to store a list of local external resources: local vendors + venues

For more context, the interviews are attached to issue #279, at https://pagure.io/fedora-hubs/issue/raw/05c8ff88c7d6dba7a25ef42dd8c39ebeb3d66aa8b146fbfc3a8d007f53a7e57c-Interview_Summaries_anonymized.pdf

I've done my best to distill those interviews. The attached document shows both general ambassador tasks and those relating to acting as a resource.
