Would it be better to say something like "Please see the FESCo policy page on details of how to get sponsored to the packager group. This page contains some additional practical tips on how to navigate the policy."?

Hrm, I think this will be confusing for new comers. We don't say "go read the FESCo policy", and the bits here don't have a one-to-one correspondence with the FESCo docs either.

I think it'll be better to have a general text that just explains that it's all about gaining trust---either from the co-maintainer or from the sponsors/mentors, rather than have sections that correspond to some of the points in the FESCo docs but not all.

I think we understand the difference in this doc and the FESCo doc, but as a newcomer, I'd be a little confused as why there are bits here and bits there, and why they say similar things, but not exactly the same things---and why there are points in the FESCo docs that are not addressed here..

Yes, I understand what you mean.
I was thinking similar thoughts when I wrote this pull request.
The line between the FESCo policy and this page is blurry,
there was temptation to propose even the remaining parts for the policy.

You are right about the matching section titles approach,
it does not come about very nicely.
I will try to rewrite this in generic terms.

I simplified this, it looks better now.
There is not a lot of content left,
but still enough to keep the page I think.
What you do you think?
