created a usb with rufus for fedora 31 xfce spin.
persitent partition size: 8 GB partition scheme: GPT target sytem: UEFI(non CSM) file system: FAT32(default)
to boot of the usb after changing the boot order. the first two options don't work. as in, some text appears but, at the end, the laptop turns off.
to successfully boot to the liveusb, click troubleshoot -> select the only boot option present there. I think a part of its name is 'safe graphics'.
its a MSI GL63 8re 455IN laptop with gtx 1060 and core i7 cpu.
using a san disk pen drive. and rufus 3.8 to create it.
don't know how to fix, or diagnose. and not sure if Fedora will work properly if I install it. can't keep looking at that extremely low resolution, whatever it is.
it would be cool if I could take screenshots. but at minimum have some other record of what boot option was selected.
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora/f31/install-guide/install/Booting_the_Installation/#sect-boot-menu has a similar screenshot but for fedora 21.
the option that works is 'start Fedora-Xfce-Live 31 in basic graphics mode'
when youenter the OS, find the display option which reported that - resolution is 800x600, refresh rate is 75 Hz. On windows, refresh rate for same screen is 60Hz by default.
persistent partition feature doesn't work. steps- first do 'dnf update' then hit no o refuse the big 202M download; if M means megabyte.
then update coreutils and sudo. then change appearance to some dark theme, from appearance option. then rebooted to find that none of the changes were saved.
then spent a lot of time searching for the logs or for default help app to find logs folder quickly. there were 3 folders named log -> /run/log , /dev/log, /var/log . the last folder had files. then had to figure out how to get it on pen drive. mounted the 'persistence' drive using desktop icon, wasted some time then figured out that only root has permissions, so 'sudo thunar' to copy files to persistence partition. really annoying part over, I thought.
then switched over to ubuntu and couldn't open the boot.log file, for some reason, luckily Ubuntu is installed, and has correct resolution, so can use browser and battery drain is lower. found how to fix issue, it was permission issue, used 'sudo chown log/' to copy the entire folder under /home. then open gparted to delete the two partiitions and format them. then copied the log folder back to the pen drive.
boot.log
went to boot order and set windows as first. finally, checked that windows could read the files. success. so got the boot.log file, which I think has the complete boot log. which doesn't have the message I wanted. well, I wrote it a line of it down as I expected problems, its - /etc/multipart.conf does not exist, blacklisting all devices. don't know what that file does or what /etc is used for, it has a cryptic name unlike log.
here are the contents of boot.log file, its really hard to read on vscode or notepad.

I think I'll avoid fedora unless anything improves. but if it does, it will take long time for me to know.
about fedora mediawriter maybe it will magically work better with 'fedora media writer'. but I'm not risking it since, its - it is 20 times as big as rufus. rufus -> 1.1 MB. fedora mediawriter for windows -> 20.7 MB - it is not open-source, so maybe its proprietary. rufus is open-source. - it has no sha256 or sha512 checksums. neither does rufus. - is only for fedora OS. rufus is multi-purpose or at least also works for Ubuntu. its mostly the 3rd point w.r.t. first point that makes me back off everytime I think about using fedora mediawriter.
closing as not planning on wrestling with fedora.
