The decompress time between 'bzip2' and 'xz' is about the same, but I see a roughly 9% reduction in the metadata file size when using 'xz'. Support for 'xz' files is native to RHEL8.
Can EPEL switch to using this higher compression algorithm?
I've made a change that will hopefully do this.
Lets check tomorrow and see if it worked.
This was implemented back in 2020, so it appears to have worked.
