#4 *planned* and *announced* phaseout of upstream geospatial software
Closed by iucar. Opened by rsbivand.

R-rgdal and R-rgeos will be affected by the archiving (phasing out) of R packages rgdal and rgeos in October 2023 (startup messages have been emitted for several months). See also https://r-spatial.github.io/evolution/ and reports therein.

Fallout here: no upstream rgdal or rgeos from October 2023. Further fallout: R-sp < 2.0-0 will cease working from October 2023, and sp 2.1.0 to be released in late September or early October dropping rgdal, rgeos and maptools is strongly advised.

Thanks, packages R-rgdal and R-rgeos are now retired from F39+.

Thanks, @iucar . Is there any way to peg R-sp F39+ to sp>= 2.1-0? Earlier sp (< 2) default to using rgdal, and sp == 2.0-* can still use rgdal.

F39 is planned for October, so I believe there's margin to land sp 2.1 in
the final freeze (Oct 3), or at least as an update after release (Oct 17).

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind in talking to Edzer; I think we'll go for the last week in September if we can push down the failing reverse dependency count sufficiently on the sp 2.0-0 to 2.1.0 update.
